Four more rounds to go and this year’s Macau Elite League title is still an open story. Currently Benfica de Macau and Ka I are separated by just one point. Our Macau correspondent Afonso Pires gives you an overview of the recent developments.
Starting into the second part of this season Benfica had a 3 points advantage over Ka I, but in a great match Ka I defeated Benfica 3-2 (Round 10) and eliminated their lead. Two rounds later Benfica de Macau drew with Lai Chi and Ka I took over the top of the league by two points. However in round 13 Ka I lost to Sporting de Macau 3-1 and were once again passed by Benfica on the table. With four more matches to go both teams still have about the same chance to become the 2015 Macau Elite League champion.
For the remaining rounds, Benfica and Ka I have a relatively easy draw, but each team will face at least one tough opponent. Ka I will play against Monte Carlo, currently ranked 3rd, in round 15. The last match between these two sides ended in a 0-0 draw, which suggests a promising fight between two of the biggest teams in Macau football history. Benfica will play against C.P.K. (4th) in Round 17, which will be a crucial game for both teams. Benfica are not allowed to drop any points if they want to become champions and C.P.K still have the chance to finish the season as 3rd. Previously Benfica de Macau won 4-0 against C.P.K. (Round 8), but the latter have improved a lot since then and won’t be such an easy take anymore.
The third place this year will be played out between C.P.K., Monte Carlo and Sporting de Macau. Although Monte Carlo are currently ranked 3rd, they still have to take on both C.P.K. and Sporting, so everything will be open until the last minute.
In the battle for relegation, there is no hope left for Macau U-23 (MFA Development), which only managed to secure only 1 point in the whole season. However, for the second relegation spot, three teams are still in danger: Chuac Lun, Casa de Portugal and Policia are separated by only two points.
All in all, Benfica is in the pole position to win their second Macau championship, but with some luck Ka I could also claim their 4th league title instead. Who you think is gonna make it?
