Taipo stays in Premier League despite relegation

After the HKFA had set the deadline to June 23rd, Taipo FC decided to accept the offer and to stay in the Premier League for the coming 2015/16 season in spite of finishing at the bottom. Provided that both Sun Pegasus and YFCMD can sort out their financial troubles on time, there will be 10 clubs fighting in Hong Kong’s top flight.

After finishing the inaugural season of the Premier League with only 9 teams, the HKFA aimed to increase the number, which turned out to be more challenging than expected. 1st Division champion Metro Gallery Sun Source suddenly decided to reject promotion out of financial reasons, while runner-up Hong Kong Football Club also wanted to keep its amateur status. Hence, Southern District, ranked on 3rd spot and backed by the Kwoon Chung bus company, was the only team willing to get promoted.

Taipo have already set aside a budget of HK$ 8 million, but is still negotiating with potential sponsors. Hong Kong’s district teams, such as Yuen Long, Wong Tai Sin and Tai Po, receive HK$ 1.5 million via government subsidies.

The season is set to start on 11 September 2015.
