The FA Cup follows its own rule. At least that’s what could explain the early elimination of Hong Kong’s biggest football clubs from the quarter finals of the prestigious cup competition. The first victim were Eastern on April 16th, losing 0-1 to a motivated Yuen Long team, which also successfully avenged their defeat in the Premier League one week earlier. In the evening, it was time for Rangers to outshine Dreams with a 5-2 victory at Tsing Yi Sports Ground.
On Sunday, April 17th, Pegasus FC destroyed South China’s hopes for a potential trophy this season. The Caroliners, who still wait for the return of injured Australian striker Ryan Griffiths, were eliminated by a 1-3 defeat. Eventually, Kitchee lost once more against their stern rival Southern District, this time 1-2, despite dominating most of the game.
Hence, the FA Cup semi-finals will go ahead without the three biggest clubs, which might be not a big boost for fan attendance. On April 30th, Rangers will take on Yuen Long and on May 1st Pegasus will face Southern District. Both matches will be played at Mong Kok Stadium, where kick off is scheduled for 3 pm.
