Kitchee were the first team to book their place in the 2016/17 Senior Shield final after they managed to overcome Tai Po on Christmas Day at Mong Kok stadium by 2:1. The Bluewaves took the lead after Luis Eduardo headed the ball into the roof of his own net from a powerful bicycle kick from Sandro, but Yuto Nakamura equalised for the Greens from close range just nine minutes later. The win was sealed for Alex Chu’s side, however, with Sandro once again proving to be the catalyst as he collected a Rufino pass to spin round the defence and power his shot into the far right of the net.
Eastern will be their opponents in the final after the Blues secured a 1:0 win over Southern. It was the Aberdeeners who had the better of the early chances including a half volley from Paul Ngue that came crashing back off the crossbar, but last year’s top scorer Giovane came to his side’s rescue in the 66th minute with a fantastic long range effort to set up a tantalising final between the two championship rival teams on the 15th January, 2017 at Hong Kong Stadium at 3pm.
