Fan Voices: Ben Poon at the HK vs Bhutan screening

Live outdoor fan screenings are rare events in Hong Kong but luckily they still exist and are becoming more prevalent as Hong Kong football enjoys a mini-revival. Offside.hk correspondent Christopher KL Lau caught up with Hong Kong fan Ben Poon as he enjoyed the atmosphere and sense of community provided by a live outdoor projector screening of Hong Kong’s away game in Bhutan at the campus of Polytechnic University.

Ben Poon, 27 (Part-Time Football Coach)

Ben Poon

Why did you come tonight to the live public screening?

To support the Hong Kong team as they are away to Bhutan.

Will you try and watch the Hong Kong versus China game?

Yes! Sure! I have a ticket from before!

You have a ticket from before?

Yes, I have tickets from before. I brought the Hong Kong home game tickets package.

Even for the China game?

Yes, I am waiting for the ticket organizers to contact me.

Do you think it was a good decision to have the Hong Kong vs China game in Mong Kok stadium and not Hong Kong stadium?

I am disappointed as I hoped that many Hong Kong residents could support the Hong Kong team at Hong Kong stadium (40,000 Capacity) but now the game will be at Mong Kok Stadium which can just hold 6000 people.

Has Hong Kong Football grown and developed in recent times?

Yes, Hong Kong football has improved! I am a part-time football coach and it seems from observation that the next generation of youth players will have better technical ability and this will benefit all. I do hope Hong Kong football will improve.

How can Hong Kong football improve?

Like Hong Kong coach Kim says ‘We must fight well for Hong Kong!” We need to coach the Hong Kong youths better and have a better youth team.

Thank You!
